          About Rolex Daytona

          First introduced in 1963, the Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is one of the world’s most iconic chronographs, with deep roots in motorsports. Originally known simply as the Cosmograph, this manual-winding chronograph for racers was renamed in 1965 by Rolex to commemorate its appointment as the official timekeeper of the famous Daytona NASCAR race. For a long time, the watch was considered a niche product in the Rolex catalog, with relatively few sales until the first automatic Daytona was released in 1988. Since then, interest in the watch has increased dramatically and continues to soar as new models are released. This popularity has also led to a surge in sales of vintage Daytonas, with collectors willing to pay top dollar for a watch with good provenance. In 2017, Daytona mania reached its peak when a reference 6239 owned by actor Paul Newman became the most expensive watch ever sold, setting a record of $17.8 million. Since its sale, the popularity of the Rolex Daytona watch has shown no signs of waning, with demand for both vintage and modern watches continuing to outstrip supply.
